I want my son's friends to hang out at our house. I am a stay at home mom and want to be able to keep an eye on my kids. (I know this instantly makes me NOT cool.) Let's say my kids are between 10 and 16. How can I make our rec room a place where the kids will like to hang out? Soda in the fridge? X-box or playstation? What makes someone's house a cool place to hang out?

hey,
What you can do is just talk to them like ask them how they are...once you sorta get to know them try to be funny, although they might look at you weird they'll think your cool for trying...as long as you don't try to overly act "like them" and if they try to tell you a joke, don't say, "that really isn't funny, you shouldn't laugh at that" instead see the funniness in it dont' reprimand your son about what he tells you...it will only discourage him to talk to you like that again...

Well, this is a hard question to answer. I would start by asking the teens I know about how I can change my home to fit their needs and also mine. Not necessarily "cool" but a local hangout where teens can have fun within boundaries. A person's house is a cool place to hang out if it is always a fun environment to be in and people WANT to be at that place.

get a cheap pooltable or some kind of basketball game and bean bags and video games stuff like that... that is cool and air hockey is fun to play too... to make someones house cool is to have it feel welcoming.. that always helps... let the kids now what the bounderies are what they are allowed to do without asking that always makes them feel more comfortable...

Well, just buy snacks and drinks, have a good tv, and any game system is fine as long as you have good games. Personally, I am fine with almost any house that feels comfortable and doesn't feel like there's something wrong with it. I doubt there's something bad about your house though. Maybe a pool table too.

Things out of the ordinary! When we were young we had dirt bikes, trampolines and snowmobiles! Not alot of our friends did. But then that was years ago. But I would suggest cool things to do... pinball machine, pool table, etc.... Depends on what your willing to spend to have the cool house!

im 15, and i kinda cringe when i hear "cool mom." I think, based on personal experience, that you should just accept your kids for who they are. Let them do some crazy things as long as it doesn't hurt them permanently, and try to understand what they're feeling. but don't ever show it.

why do you want to be a "cool" mom? as long as you love your child and are taking care of him which sounds like you are, you shouldnt worry about being cool. worry about being his mother, not his friend...
