Donald Arthur Mattingly. He was a class act. He came up through the minor leagues as a Yankee, worked very hard to make himself the best player in the game, putting up great numbers in the '80s, before steroids came alone, and was the best defensive first baseman in the game. He was also great with fans, and was also cheered on the road. It is just sad that his bad back curtailed his productivity, and that he retired and wasn't part of the championship teams.
Ironically, many people believe that his hard work, taking thousands of practice swings over the years was what damaged his back. He would have been a Hall of Famer with a few more good years. Donnie Baseball, my favorite Yankee and our future Yankee manager!

Mel Stottlemyre, who had three 20 win seasons, in years they did not win pennants. A classy and underrated pitcher.
