Book smart is you have a lot of information, but without street smarts you have no common sense. You might know what the square root of a 6 digit number is but you're contemplating the answer while walking down a dark alley in a bad neighborhood.

People who read and understand books, are booksmart. People who can read on the streets are streetsmart.
Actually booksmart comes from reading, comprehending, and remembering what you read in books. People who are steetsmart know what they know from living; they can understand and survive on the street.

Street smart is when you learn by experience and from people in working class, tough urban environments. Much street smarts you learn for yourself, the hard way.
Book smart is knowledge acquired by reading, listening sometimes, knowledge which is for the most part theoretical, untested.
