My favourite is "Whiskey in the Jar," which incidentally was on Metallica's Garage album, and has been played by many bands, including the Pogues.
Robin Hood ballads were quite popular in their day.
Possibly the best ballad ever is "Tam O'Shanter," a poem by Robert Burns.
