Central,Alabama is a semi rural area of the state.Calera is about an hour or so from Birmingham.It is also about 5 hours from the Gulf Beaches.It is a very pleasant and nice place.

You're probably better off living several miles closer to Birmingham, where there are plenty of amenities.

Or if you want an eclectic small college town, then there's Montevallo a few miles south.
