I have an '89 Saab 900 with a standard transmission and it does not specify in the owners manuel what fluid must be used to fill up the "gear box oil" reservoir. I have heard that transmission fluid might not be necessary but rather brake fluid or something else. Does anyone know what I should fill it up with?

If you are filling up the actual transmission itself, which I assume you are, since on your Saab there should be the actual words "gearbox oil" stamped on the case of the transmission. There are two transmission options for your vehicle, one holds 2.6 quarts and the other holds 3.0 quarts. Both transmissions require either 10w30 or 10w40 weight engine oil. Depending on if you live in a very cold climate use the 10W40. When the transmission is full, the fluid should register between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the stick.

The reference to using brake fluid is going to be in the hydraulic clutch system, and usually this small reservior is located beside the brake master cylinder on the firewall. This reservoir would use brake fluid, not the actual transmission.

Please get a Saab person to show you how do not guess. Under side of the saab has three or four drain plugs and everything from brake fluid for the clutch resv. to 85/90wt gear oil for the final drive and some early saabs used 10/40 motor oil for the transmissions. Fluids are specific for the work they do.

The first thing I'd want to know is why is it low? If it's leaking you need to have it fixed. Some standard transmissions use gear oil or 80w/90w some use automatic transmission fluid. You need to know which for sure. The results of using the wrong oil won't be good.

DOT 3 fluid could do it. DOT 4 is slightly better extreme priced and it does preserve the strains better effective. check out strains and connections for signs and indications of seepage or leaks. There are 3 cylinders you should envision see if their seals are wiped out, signs and indications of a leak will teach. one in all them is positioned coming via the firewall to the right of your take carry of pedal. the different is the draw close cylinder. And the slave cylinder down on the fringe of your transmission. verify the strains in between the cylinder too. replace if neccessary. there are rebuild kits for all 3 cylinders. expenses below replace.

Since it's a Saab, you'll want to fill it with twenty $100 bills, especially if it's been empty for some time.

You might want to go to your nearest auto part store and ask them. If they cant help, go to your local library and get a Haynes book on your car. It costs $20 for a book at the part store. Also you can go to www.autozone.com
