Yes, the economy has been terrible. In recent years, Russian women have actually married Mexican men for a better life. Seriously!
And, yes, the men are often alcoholics, thus the women don't always want to have kids by them.
And, of course, a lot of abortions also mean a future dearth of population.
My son just sent me a URL which said this year there will be 793,000 more deaths than births.
Part of this results from the average age of women going up to the point they pass child bearing years, so the loss can actually accelerate very fast.
This has also been true in Germany, though causes are different because German economy isn't that bad. A friend told me he had seen a movie which was based on the first baby born in a town in like 7 years.
Japan and the United States are expected to also start dying like that, around 2020, unless we get a lot of illegals to move here...

The life expectancy for men there is 59 and for women 72. A lot of men have serious drinking problems, and suicide is a big issue, too. It has been said that the problems in the countryside are worse than the government is leading the world to believe.
