I live with my mom and 16 year old brother. I'm 20. Last year we had to have the gas heat cut off, because we couldn't afford it. It's almost time for it to be really cold again. Is it illegal for a minor to live in a home without heat? We ended up using space heaters last year, but they're dangerous and don't work well(still very cold).

Come to Robeson County North Carolina.
I'll show you numerous homes of all ages that cannot afford to heat nor cool their homes.
Kerosene heaters are typical aound here.

Thank God that many Churches and other organizations can and do help. But many go without.
Elderly or minors (or anyone) in need is sad.

Against the law?
I doubt it.

Only a Few States would consider 16 year minor.
When you can get drivers license-work-drop out of school.
Leave home- ect.

Mom should check with Social Services in her county.
She may qualify for assistance all year aound.

In some states the department of family services may take the under age children to a foster home. But, do you have a job? Can you help out the the bills? You are 20.

Some areas have social services that can help.

I don't think it is specifically against the law to not have heat in your home. Of course, in parts of Tennessee electricity is still a novelty. If you can get some winter help with heat, you should get it. Even if you cannot get enough help to get through all winter, you could get some fuel to boost you through the coldest days and nights.

good luck

Go to your Tennessee Department of Welfare and ask them for assistance

If you regularly go to church, ask your minister and see if he can help.
