Rate times time equals distance.

Let t be the time the first car travels. The second car will travel t-1. The distance the first car travels will be 55t. The second car will go 60(t-1). You want the total distance to be 285 miles, so

55t + 60(t - 1) = 285

55t + 60t - 60 = 285

115t = 345

t = 345/115 = 3

So the first car travels 3 hours, the second travels two hours, and the time you're looking for is 4:00 pm. (Assuming no time zone changes.)

4:00 is correct, 1st car leaves, goes 55 miles, gets there at 2, from 2-3 each car goes another 55+60 miles = 170, from 3-4 they go another 55+60 = 285 total and the time is 4:00.
