Probably because most people take politics and religion very seriously. For my part, I never really try to argue or do anything to upset someone over those two issues. Everybody has their own opinions and I try my very best to respect them.
It could also just be that people couldn't figure that it was a joke because they just didn't get it.

I guess people don't think someone being tortured and burned at the stake is a joking matter.

Stupid reason to report someone, though!! I agree.

I think sometimes people get upset with a question because they've come across a slew of similar questions and they just freak-out on yours.

Or maybe the question just offends them depending on whats happening in their life at the time.

Try not to take it personally and move on.

Some jokes are best not told, I guess.

Some people are very thinned skin and get offended by most anything.

Some people get offended if you wish them a Merry Christmas - go figure.

Personally, i wouldn't think it was funny but I wouldn't report it. You get all kinds of people on a board like this and a poster is bound to offend people some of the time.

It's no big deal. Don't worry about it.
I got a violation just because I told someone their question was stupid. Those things are worthless.

Oh man! I answered that question and I thought your answer was funny (but I'm an evil atheist!).
Hey, they took off one of my answers because I made fun of Donald Trump's hair.

I guess it offended someone who didn't take it as a joke. I'm not sure, I don't remember seeing it.

Politics and religion don't mix and joking about it on a serious forum just isn't right...

Time and place for everything.
