I know it's dumb to ask a guy what he thinks of your looks... but he's more of a friend anyway...
Somehow the subject shifted to if we thought we were ugly or not. I said I didn't think I was worth looking at, and he looked straight at me and said he's not going to tell me what he thinks, then kinda smiled and looked down.
What does that mean? I'm not pretty, I know, but, judging by his response, am I really that ugly? His friends already rated me as "so-so". But they were the ones who wanted to talk to me in the first place...

If you analyze every single glance, look, and smile that a guy directs to you, you will drive yourself crazy! It is impossible to understand what any person, guy or girl, is trying to tell you. None of these answers are right... the only way you are going to know for sure what he meant was by asking him...
as a side note, I dont even think that it is that big a deal to even think or ask about.

Who knows? But most importantly, it doesn't matter. Sure, looks matter and not all of us are drop dead beautiful. But I have known movie stars in real life and without their make-up they are like any one else.
if you want to look better, study what are the attributes of goodlooking people. Hair always good? Make-up nice? Like any subject, study it!
And the truth about life is, no one is pretty to everyone, and although looks are important, so is being able to say, "well, so what?" and find something in this big beautiful world full of possibilities that does make you feel good.

I see two possibilities
1) He isn't going to risk getting in trouble telling you that. Which has nothing to do with your looks.
2) He thinks you are very beautiful and doesn't want to be embarassed by telling you, so he gave you that hint to let you know.
Believe me, if he thought you ugly, there would be no smile!

No one can possibly know for certain what he thinks - especially not someone who patronizes you by calling you "dear," as though she's the all-knowing, wise mother of creation.
You have to ASK him. It's the only way.
