I went to Yahoo small business and started mine there. They have great software and you can make your site look great in just a few minutes. I pay around $10 a month for it. You can check mine out at:

I am assuming (as this is in the Small Business Section) that you want to try to make money with your site. If so There are many things you can do a lot of it depends on what talents you already have. If you have good computer skills there are online temp freelance companies (elance can be found in the free stuff section of my third source below) Survey taking is Slow but it does work (I make about a hundred a month from the three companies I do surveys with it takes about a half hour a day this works out to about 7 dollars an hour) I am also training as a medical transcriptionist but this costs about 2 to 3 thousand to get the training and takes about a year. You could try to learn Affiliate marketing (the third source below is an affiliate marketing site) but it is also very slow and has a STEEP learning curve. CafePress (My first and third source) is fun if you have artistic talent or a good imagination. Again the money is slow but steady and a good store can really take off. DO NOT PAY for any programs (unless you can try them for free first like you can with cafepress and see if you can make money with it) If you have to pay FIRST it is probably a scam (even if it is only $9.99)

Here are the steps you need to take when creating your online business:

STEP 1: Set Your Goals - Why do you want a web site? What is the size of the online market? What are the goals for your website?

STEP 2: Develop Your Web Site Strategy - Who is your website target audience? What typically appeals to your target audience? How are the other websites (your competition) reaching out to this target audience? How will you measure your performance?

STEP 3: Set-Up Implementation Plans - What name will you give to your site? How do you envision the design of your web site? How will you create your website? How will you create your content? How will you maintain your website?

STEP 4: Start the Ball Rolling - Do you have a logo? For e-retailers, do you have the critical components needed to run an e-commerce site? How are you going to host your site?

STEP 5: Create and Launch Your Web Site - Have you uploaded your site with your chosen web host provider? Are the scripts and application you need for your website functioning well? Have you tested your website?

STEP 6: Promote Your Web Site and Measure Its Results - Do you have a plan in place to market your website? Do you regularly review your traffic logs and web site performance tracker? How are you going to get sites to link to you? Do you know the search engine keywords that you rank well? If your site is not visible in the search engine results pages for its keywords, what strategies do you intend to do?

STEP 7: Maintain Your Website and Grow Your Web Business - Continue to find ways to grow your web business. How do you intend to continue your education on web development?

You need three things:

1. A domain name registered to you.
2. The actual site (HTML, images, scripts -- whatever you want on your site).
3. An account with a Web hosting company that would host your site under your domain name.

Many Web hosting companies offer domain registration, so you may not need to register domain as a separate step, but do it as a part of your setup with a Web hosting company.

I also used Yahoo Small Business with the $10 plan to get used to the site builder software, which I liked alot. I am currently inactive with my business but i will return to it once i am ready to really take off with the products and services. Since those fees are tax deductible I want to first get my business legal before going all out with it.

If you want your own domain name (eg: mycompany.com ) you need to get that first. Then get the space to put your site. I have been using godaddy.com for several years. They are very helpful and not expensive.
