Make sure it is securely attached to the tank to reduce vibration. Consider opening it up to see if the impeller or other parts have become clogged. Don't let you water level drop too much or the filters to become too clogged

I noticed my outside the tank filter is more noisy if it has air trapped in the pickup tube. I have a whisper 2
turn the flow valve around to closed and then put it back on full open. That gets the trapped air out of mine. If it has air in it you can hear it clear it out.
If you clean down in that hole don't use metal in the motor where the magnet is. Make you a Q-tip or fasten a stick or straw onto one.

alot of times its because of the level of water in the tank and filter. You can try and clean the bottom of the filter out and see if that help. I use Tetra Tech brand on my salt tanks and they are great

try cleaning or replacing the impeller, if this doesn't work try buying a new filter, like Whisperor or penguin brands
