No, not the tv by itself. If she would happen to have a seizure, it would be because there was something else going on.
My son is 7 1/2 months, and he used to love watching the tv. He has stopped doing it so much, but he used to twist himself around so that he could see it. Even while eating he would do this. He still does it occasionally. He likes the Kirstie Alley weight loss commercials, and this commercial for a home equity loan that comes on a lot. Something about their voices, I guess.
He's never had a seizure or anything, and he is very healthy.
It's not good to just set them down so they can watch it, though. It could possibly damage their eyes if they stare too long, and experts reccomend no amount of television for this age.
When babies get a little older, around 12 months, I think that it's ok to let them watch something short that's made for babies, like the Baby Einstein DVD's, or maybe something on that new channel that's all for babies. (I don't get that channel, so I don't know what the shows are like, but the commercials for it look interesting.)

I have never heard that watching TV would cause seizures in a young child
What I have heard is that if you allow a child under two to watch long hours of TV they are more likely to develop Attention Deficit Disorder.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no TV before age 2 and that children over 2 be limited to one to two hours a day of educational material on TV or other screen media.
I personally don't watch a lot of TV & so my little guy has never watched either, but I am a firm believer that parents should do what they feel is right for their children, so I am not telling you not to let her watch TV. Many parents do so, including my family and friends.
I am only sharing what I have read and heard.
I wouldn't worry about seizures!

If the child has a seizure disorder, then sure....TV could cause a seizure.
If your baby is normal and healthy, then I think your mom is either misinformed or is just trying to scare you.
But babies really have no need for being in front of the TV. Amazingly, they've been developing normally for thousands of years without any "help" from television. People just want an excuse for using their TV as a babysitter. The best way to help your baby develop is to talk to her and have a lot of body contact. A sling or wrap would be a great investment.

It depends on what you mean watch TV.
Not too good to really watch TV for too long... the brain idles when young babies watch too long but then again, the colour and movements of the TV programmes and commercial do stimulates the senses. Also try to watch the TV with them so that it's more interactive and fun rather than just dumping them in front of the TV all by themselves.
Moderation is the rule.

It can happen if a pattern comes on it can set a seizure off. Most notably with certain video games. I would let the baby watch something like Baby Einstein. At least it is educational. But don't just park the baby in front of the TV.

That's not true. It's not a good idea to let a 5 month old watch tv, but it won't bring on seizures. I have three kids and our tv's always on for the noise. It never did anything to any of them.

No its not true but remember depending on how old your mother is she may have "old school" training an example of this is my mother in law grew up in a time when mustard plasters cured all manners of chest conditions. Now that my have been fine then but i was just not comfortable putting boiling towel with mustard on my new baby who had a mild cold. She obviously means well but there are many misconceptions that have long since come out as old wives tales.

I have never heard of that before. It could be possible...but unlikely unless their prone to seizures.
However, many people feel it's not good for children to wathc TV. Then again, its not good for anyone to watch a lot of TV. LOL (even adults become lazy in front of the tube)
My daughter is 3 months old, and I have baby einstein dvds for her to watch, which help in her development. She enjoys them, lots of colors, and peacful music. Which is good for little ones. Sometimes it gives them just the right stimulation, and they enjoy it. As long as our not leaving you child in front of the TV as a babysitter, or letting them watch harmful violent shows. You and your child should be just fine!

There have been some instances when it fas happened, but you really shouldn't let a baby watch tv. My four year old daughter only started watching Noggin a couple months ago, and now I wish he hadn't. It's cute to see tem in front of it, but it takes so much from them. I would try reading to them or even listening to music instead, it tends to open up their imagination much more.
