It's truly a personal taste. But based upon visiting over 60 countries, and being a true breadaholic myself, I can say that bread - in its diversified form - can be found in almost every country, other than the far eastern world (where rice takes over the starch aspect of the meal). In fact, bread has always been since antiquity the meal of the poor. So easy to make with just flour and water, at times with addition of yeast, spices, or milk. Aside from specific bread, even pizzas, focaccias, pitas, lavash, naan, tortillas, etc., are all forms of bread.

Which country makes the best? Cannot tell! But I can tell you that certain countries, due to their ethnicity background, make more varieties, like Italy, where you can find hard crust, soft crust, brick oven, square, round, small, big, wheat, flavored, etc., etc. which are inherent of a specific geographic area of Italy.

As far as availability, again due to multi ethnicity reasons, the USA allows you to find all the breads in the world in one location. For exaple if you are in NY, you can basically find all the breads in the world in a few square miles! Pretty cool. Therefore the US have the largest selection available. But the US don't have a true American bread, unless you want to classify as American the so called Wonder bread which compared to all the world varieties, unfortunately doesn't stand ... even a comparison!

Therefore, using the grammatical meaning of your question, the USA "has" the best bread because it has the widest selection in the world. While Italy makes the best varieties.

I've been to many countries, and I have to say it is hard to beat the USA. France and Italy husually have the built in atmosphere that makes anything taste better...but I've had bread just as good in the U.S.
I have found, however, that within the U.S., West Coast bread is usually better than on the East Coast. I'm sure many will disagree, and I have had great bread all across the country...it's just that I've found good bread easier to find out West.

Mmmmm, I love cuban bread! Fresh from the oven....also if you've never had it I suggest trying fresh Amish breads. They use all natural stuff!

I'm partial to bread from Bosnia. Lepinja is my favorite. It's excellent with anything, but best with cevapi (savory beef sausages).
