the cell wall. this is what prevents the plant cell from lysing in a hypotonic environment. human cells do not have a cell wall so in a hypotonic environment they will lyse.

In animals, the cells are part of an organism that have osmoregulatory systems to prevent the cells from being exposed to very dilute environments. Mammals have kidney's that remove excess water if needed. Fresh water amphibians have kidneys that can produce copious amounts of dilute urine, fresh water fish have special cells in the gills that can pump salt (actively) from the dilute environment into a relatively concentrated blood stream
