The hard drive is definatelly dying of slow death. It is important that you back up any important data now before it crashes and you lose everything.
Go buy a new drive and re-install everything back on. If you are not familiar with what to do you can take your computer to any electronics store like Circuit City, Best Buy, Comp Usa and they have a technical installation devision which handles all upgrades. They can remove and install a new hard drive. it is best to call them and get a rough price quote as to what the work will cost.
If you have a computer savy friend he or she can help you out by doing the job for you.
Good luck.

Yes, your hard drive is going to die and hopefully not before you get a chance to get your data copied onto CD(s).
I have a Toshiba notebook and it started behaving very weird too just like your's, but not with putting pressure on one side. My problem was that the hard drive seemed to be reading/writing too much when it shouldn't have been doing anything, then when I tried to use my restore CD I couldn't restore the hard drive back to factory spec no matter what I did.
I tried telling the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy that the hard drive was going bad, but they didn't believe me until they screwed around with it for a couple days and couldn't get it to work either. Then, they finally sent it to their service center.
I don't know what their problem is over there. It's not like they don't know me there, I have been going there for years and helping them out, when they didn't understand what the customer was talking about or what they needed.

Better backup whatever you need and start think about not storing any important data in that hard drive. If the hard drive contain the OS, move the OS to other hard drive ASAP.
It is cheaper to buy a new hard drive than fixing one that going to die.

I would quit damaging the hardware by playing with it and pushing on it. I would sugest you backup anything you want to keep off of the hard drive and buy a new one.

Sounds like the cable might be loose, or some other wiring is loose.
