The answer is "b" because an independent clause is just a clause that can stand by itself and be a complete sentence. There are actually two independent clauses in that example- "The doctor was worried" and "Charlie was putting on too much weight". But the answers only provide "the doctor was worried" so it is the correct answer.

an independent clause is a clause that can stand alone w/o the other part of the sentence, or other words. The answer here is B because "The doctor was worried" can stand alone. "Charlie was putting on too much weight" implies there's more to that sentence we need to know. But I cannot say for sure because I don't understand what the "a" is in your question. rephrase?
