they are called sonographers. the profession is "diagnostic medical sonography." i am a sonographer and i love my job. it takes a lot of hard work but it's definitely worth it. you go through a lot of training and you learn a LOT more than just babies. you have to have a full understanding of human anatomy. i work at a hospital and do quite a few "baby" exams, but i also do gallbladders, kidneys, venous studies, thyroids, etc. i was in school for 6 years. it seems like a lot but now that i'm done with school, i can't imagine doing anything else!

They are called Ultrasound Technicians or Sonographists. They must take a 2-year course that includes practicing in an ultrasound facility under the direct supervision of both an experienced Sonographist and a Radiologist. Once they finish the course, they must take and pass an exam that measures the aspiring technician's skills and knowledge, both theoretical and practical. Upon passing the exam, the state's Health Department expides a license which allows the technician to practice his/her profession in the state of residence. The sonographist must take continued education courses [the amount of hours-credit vary from one state to the other] and submit evidence of the courses taken to the Health Department in order for the license to be valid.
