i'm having a racial identity crisis. In america, people seem to think if ur tan ur hispanic. They don't even have any doubts in their mind what ethnicity i am, they just assume. I don't have the stereotypical "asian look" b/c i'm malaysian and malaysians tend to have darker skin color and big set eyes. Many asians don't welcome which depresses me and i dont feel anything in common with the hispanic community. i just feel out of place.

Instead of trying to relate to a group based on race, try relating to a group based on your interests. Do you like sports? Do you like art or music or collecting weird things? Do you like to dance or sing or cook? Find a way to relate to all races and forget the people that simply judge you based on your looks. I know it seems easier said than done.

Good luck.

Be out and proud...wear malay style influenced clothes, eat malay food, and so on. Invite your non-malay friends to share in your culture. Trust me, here in the US, so many of us left our ethnicity and cultures at Ellis island. Millions of people wish they could remember their songs, stories, languages, recipes. Be proud of who you are, and do what you can to share. You can't influence the mob, but you can influence people, one dinner, one conversation at a time. Have fun with that... When someone starts talking like your spanish....whip out some malay, and smile!

Don't worry so much, just be who you are. Those that stereotype are fools anyway. If they dont like you for who you are, you dont need them anyway.

Some people are just ignorant, but many are just plain stupid. Just tell them you are AMERICAN and nothing else counts!
