Older men have already played the flirting games and find them....well...a bit silly.
Best bet would be direct.

since he's a grad student professor he is probobly pretty smart. Since he's involved, he's probobly not thinking you're into him or at least not wanting you to be into him. However, if he's into you, you'll know it. On the flip side, my ex-wife was 18 when we met and I was 23. Not a big difference except that I was her boss, so the intimidation factor was there. I "cleared the airways" so to speak by telling her that "If you weren't seeing someone, I'd love to take you to lunch sometime".
Just be honest, confident and casual about it. Don't make a big deal outta it. Tell him something along the lines of what I told her...
"If you weren't seeing someone _________, I'd love it if we could go out sometime. You seem like such a great guy." This can be left to his own interpretation and is non-threatening.
I'm not 35 but take what you want from my advice.

hey your living in the new millennium. If you like the guy just tell him. He'll respond better than if you keep dropping hints that he probably wont get anyway.
