Start by making the engine breath, i.e intake manifold, headers, throttle body and exhaust. Neuspeed specializes in VW performance parts and has all the parts you need to increase the HP of your Golf. Remember an engine is an air pump, the more air it can intake the more fuel it can add and the faster you will go. Before you can add other performance parts its essential to open it up and let it breath. Neuspeed can tell you exactly how much hp you will gain with their parts and they have packages that have been dyno tested and are accurate.

First things first. Fit a decent quality induction kit, and a performance-oriented stainless steel exhaust system. Make sure the engine is bang-on tune, new plugs and leads, fresh oil and filter, all variables checked and adjusted as necessary. I imagine the gains from this could be as much as 20bhp with any luck
Then you could try a chip in your ECU, or a cam change. Gas Flowing the head is always a good option if possible. Once cam changes and chipping hve been carried out, you could be seeing 30 or 40 bhp extra, or even more, according to how wild you get with the cam.
Then, there is NOS injection, and that is available in 25, 50, 75 and 100 bhp increments, and you need to speak to an expert on what an 8V engine will stand without blowing-up.

Superchips - official Volkswagen Racing UK Tuning Partner. The role involves reprogramming the engine control units (ECUs) on all of VW Racing UK’s competing cars, to boost engine power and torque within the strictly defined limits of the Volkswagen Racing Cup.
They also do chips for the man in the street, looking at a potential 10bhp.

well u could always use nitro in the tank or you could put in thicker injector pipes which in turn push more fuel into the carburetter which should in turn increase you bhp output by some 15 percent depending on how well it is done.
