The most commonly used Intelligent Quotient, or IQ, test is the Stanford. Formerly called the Stanford-Benet (bin-aay), this test was made up over a 15-year research study by Dr. Stanford and Dr. Benet. Arguments over whose name should go first is what ultimately split the two Professors until Dr. Benet's death in 1967.

The Stanford IQ test can be formed into a statistical bell-shaped curve which is why professionals like to use this form most frequently. Now, I must diverge from Quickie below because they are not correct with the numbering systems or scoring in the least. Correct standard scoring is the following:
100: average
10: standard deviation.

The beauty of the Stanford is that it is easily converted to tthe standard statistical numbering system. I digress:

100 plus or minus 10 (90-110): Average IQ
100 plus or minus 20 pts (80- 120) still Average. Between these scores are where 95% of the general population are sitting).
a score of 70 or below denotes a person who is boarderline mentally retarded or could be diagnosed as having mental retardation. A score of 60 or below is currently the denotation for someone who would be labeled as "profoundly mentally retarded."
A score of 130 or above denotes gifted, and a score above 140 would denote a genius IQ.

In the last ten years it has been argued that there is more than one type of IQ. Larsen (1998) has declared that there are actually SEVEN different types of Intelligence, most widely known right now is the "EQ" or Emotional IQ).

I take a strong OFFENSE to the use of the term "idiot." it is a derogatory label and I do not believe that you would like to be called this for the rest of your life.

Also, just so you know, so-called "gifted" programs in schools are NOT RECOGNIZED by the Federal Government as a specialized program that is supported with government dollars. It is not. It does, however, challenge the student with an exceptionality and this is why it has gained such attention and notariety in the public school system. A parent loves to tell the neighbors that their child is in a program for exceptional children. But did you realize that a child who is invited to be in a program for exceptional children can also denote a child with autism and an IQ of 62? Exceptionality works both ways.

I hope this has helped, and I hope gaining the correct information from a Special Education Teacher (SPED) of children with exceptional IQ.

My "kids" are who you have called the 'idiots.' and mentally retarded. Next time don't forget the children with autism, cystic fibrosis, Asburger's Syndrome, "Downs," Savants....

Profound mental retardation > below 25
Severe mental retardation > 25-39
Moderate mental retardation > 40-54
Mild mental retardation > 55-70
Borderline > 70-79
Low Average > 80-89
Average > 90-109
High Average > 110-119
Superior > 120-129
Very Superior > 130 and above

Many school gifted programs require a score of 130 or above. As mentioned, most standardized intelligence tests do not go much higher than around 160.

That is a very complex question since there are many different tests and many different definitions of intelligence. Therefore it is difficult to compare numbers from one test to another. None of the modern tests available give numbers above 160 - they have some alternative scoring to give an estimate of higher numbers and how they might compare to older tests but they're not really comparable. In general 100 plus or minus one standard deviation is average, depending on the test that could be 10-15 points above or below 100.

100 is average. Below 80 is considered mentally retarted. Above 120 is considered very smart and above 180 is genius. Religious people typically score below 100. Muslims typically score below 60. Just FYI
