I'm a Canadian working in Jakarta, frequently traveling around the country on business and to Bali on business and pleasure. Except when the bombers are causing mayhem in Bali, Bali is very very safe, with a very low crime rate, although the Kuta Beach area can be occasionally be overrun with inebriated Aussies after 12 noon. The remainder of the island is one of the safest places in Asia. The bombers have yet to discover Sanur Beach, Nusa Dua Beach or Ubud, up in the mountains. But Kuta really has a charm.

Check out this website for the best tourist info:

Jakarta has its dark spots at night, when the pickpockets come out, so best to check with your hotel for advice on where to go. Most taxis are quite safe for everybody, although there have been some incidents with local women over the last few years. You should be fine taking a taxi from a star-rated hotel to any destination in the city. Blok M and "Kota" or China town are slightly riskier, but that said there are much more armed robberies in Pattaya Thailand than in Jakarta, a city 200 times the population.

I've traveled to Bali many times and never worried about terrorist bombing once. One interesting thing about Indonesia and terrorist attacks they are notified in advance so people generally know where to avoid. I don't know how it works but as a foreigner I just read the local English newspaper before planning my trips in Indonesia and Bali.

Another interesting note, I stayed at 5 star hotel operated by Sheraton for less than $100 USD after the bombing. It's a great place to go and relax for less money.

Of course it is.

Here are 3 main reasons why it is safe:
1) No one will blow up the beaches. Consider there are a lot of people, the terrorrist will think twice. There are so many Indonesians, and foreigners as well. And the beach is near the strait or ocean, so if they explode it, you may find yourself swimming in the sea.
2) Temples, birdparks, helicopter ride are safe, too! Don't only think about bar, pubs and malls where the bombs are usually exploded. Sometimes, you have to visit the unique temples. Visit the birdparks! Or try the helicopter ride...
3) No bomb threat in the cruise or sea... It pays a lot to ride a cruise ship or dive so I believe terrorrists will think about it.... And it is a unique experience as well.

And I have never seen any suspicious activities. Criminals rates are also very low, not like Jakarta (the capital city).

Also, I believe that the security level has been elevated, so it is the perfect time to visit Bali.

Hey, why don't you visit another city in Indonesia, too? It would be great and safe, too!!!

Yes,
I'm a Singaporean and I travel there often for business and pleasure. I'm amazed at the number of returning maids traveling alone. It seems very safe even in the touristy areas. I enjoy the food, and love the relaxing atmosphere of the whole country and people. But you have to be street smart.
