Here's the newest of the news. This is a case where parents are suing the video game company saying their child never would have killed anyone had it not been for him playing this particular game. Here's the link to the news article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060925/ap_on_re_us/ranch_killings_video_game_suit
In my honest opinion, I think the parents are as much to blame if not more than anyone else for letting their child play the game. What do you think?

Belinda - I know what you're saying. It's NEVER the parents' fault and anything that they can do to get money, they will try to find a way. If you're in the wrong, step up and take the blame and stop wasting the courts' time on stupid stuff like this when they have more important things to do like figure out how to keep child molester in prison instead of keeping them out because they are "too short." Thanks!

Kindabi - It's called lawsuit abuse and there's way too much of it going on in this country (US).

rkc - Children are very vulnerable, especially at young ages. The more they see of stuff like this, yes, it does cause some desensitization. I don't argue with that. Good point.

Oderus - Wow! We play games with our kids, they do have some video games, but none with violence. And since we got the Playstation for our kids 2 years ago, I think they have used it maybe 2 times a month, if even that. We do more interactive stuff with our kids and it's sad to say that many times in instances like the one in the article, both parents are working and are never home enough to supervise what their children are doing. Not saying that all youngsters with both parents working turn out like this, but in the majority of cases it's because the kids aren't getting the attention they need from their parents.

Gee, when I do my survey for my research paper, I'm coming here...lol. You guys are great! I honestly expected someone (especially a teen) to post something smart, but that's okay. I asked for opinions on this issue and all opinions are welcome.

"I got a ticket the other day- driving drunk, speeding, reckless driving, the works.... I think I'm gonna sue Budweiser, Ford, the highway dept, the officer that wrote the ticket (got his badge # and everything!).... Hmmmm who else can I sue for my poor judgement?"
JK- I actually don't drink but it's the same idea.... If these parents hadn't purchased the game... If this family were having dinner together... If Mom was making the kid do his homework instead of letting him playing the game... If the TV/computer wasn't in the kid's room, unsupervised...
The saddest phrase in the English language is "If only...."

Wow, I am getting so sick of hearing cases like these, plus Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is so old, the new one is San Andreas. Anyways, I think the parents and children are equally responsible for what happens. Sure, video games can influence, but what can't influence. Movies, music, and even other children's behavior can influence how someone may react. Its really the parent's responsibility to check on what their child is doing, until they become adults, or 18 years of age. Perhaps the problem started way earlier than playing Grand Theft Auto, its possible that some kid at school bullied him to the point where he broke. In that case, the parents should have been taking good care of their children and watch what kinds of things happens at school. I don't mind so much that the sufferers are trying to seek some compensation, but $600 million is outragesouly absurd and greedy. Granted that lives were lost, but $600 million is a lot, and could ruin a lot of lives, such as employees and such. Also, there are plenty of other video games out there that require the player to kill, hack and slash. They just specifically target Grand Theft Auto because its the more popular series, but gamers have been killing since gaming began, even since Doom.

I think your right if the parents had given their child proper guidance and monitored their child this could all be avoided. Although violent games can insight child into violent behavior no one put a gun to the parents head and say by this game. I don't believe the video game company is innocent in this either because they didn't have to produce these kinds of games, but the parents didn't have to buy them either and if the parents stop buying and stop their children from buying it they will no long be produced
So yes they are both guilty in this.

I think the parents are to blame. How come whenever something is wrong with someone, we blame other companies or people? Why not take some responsiblity for your actions or inactions? Suing a video game company because your son killed someone is just ridiculous.

People are entirely too "sue-happy" these days. It's really getting ridiculous. Yes, the parents are the ones to blame. However, there is a lot of violence on most of these games, as with programs on TV. It's getting out of hand. My opinion only.

its not the game. its the raising of the child. that's part of whats wrong with the world today. parents do not interact with their children they just plop them infornt of the TV or the video game console and leave them to there own demise. my son who just started 1st grade and cull and pluck a chicken almost as fast as me. and my daughters have hunted and skinned most of the small game we have here in the North East. what do you do with your youngsters? on a side note other than hunting fishing and gardening together we also play video games togther.

It is the job of the parents to raise children. This is not the responsibility of a game manufacturing company. I do not understand the mindset of those that what to sue to solve their own shortcomings or problems.

Parents are responsible, killing games are rated r, so who bought him the game?.. I've noticed a trend in America, that everyone else is responsible except the person who really is. Its the BLAME game.

I think all these gory movies and videos de-sensitizes kids to murder and other crimes, but I do not think that the movies or videos are the sole reason. I think the child's upbringing by their parents would have more to do with a child murdering.

It is the parents responsibility to monitor the activities of their children. Maybe if parents paid more attention, Columbine would have never happened.
