Why don't they just shelf that garbage can strapped to an Acme rocket sled and let them use the "UFO's" that the government has probably had for at least 20 years now? At the beginning of Desert Storm (Iraq part I for you young'uns...), there was a press conference on the evening news where the US gov't officially unveiled stealth fighters. The dope actually said right on the evening news that these planes had been flying over america (and other places) for 10 years but they could not admit to having them for national security reasons. For those of us not so sharp on our modern history, that would mean stealth fighters and bombers were flying over america in 1980. That means they were developing the technology in the 70's. That was 25 to 30 years ago. Given that 25 to 30 years before that, we were just breaking the sound barrier with new "supersonic" jets and the fact that technology advances at a geometrically increasing rate, what do you think is flying over america today with a US flag painted on it??? Why don't we stop sacrificing astronauts and just roll out the scramjet moon hoppers? I'm sure they've got much better than that hiding in air force bases deep in the rocky mountains...

Sure. But who would have thought a small chunk of icy foam would doom the Columbia?

Good engineering has no bravado. It is filled with redundancies and checks.
