The a/c never worked so I have no desire to fix it. However, the belt will break if I try to drive it. The pulley is frozen on the a/c unit

You will need to have the A/C compressor removed and then purchase a belt for a 96 Caravan that was not equipped with A/C from the parts store.

You will have to bypass the A/C unit. Go to an auto parts store and ask for a belt for your vehicle without A/C. A lot of times the idler pulley is a different size on vehicle without air conditioning, so you might have to get a belt around an inch shorter then the regular belt. Also, some vehicles were designed with air conditioning and there was no alternative. In some cases you can measure the belt rout around the pulleys and get one that length. Make sure the power steering pulley and the alternator pulley rotate the same direction or they won't work properly. In some cases you have to remove the A/C unit and install a pulley designed for the application.

If I'm not mistaken, the 96 has a separate belt for the a/c (depending on engine configuration). If that's the case, just take the belt off and you should be ok. If it's a single serpentine belt, then everyone else is correct. You'll have to either remove and compressor and get a smaller belt or if it's not in the way simply bypass the compressor.

Don't know how good an option this is, but here it goes. Disconnect the a/c electrical controls on the compressor. Get another compressor from junk on which the pulley is not frozen. Install the dummy compressor and do not attempt to reconnect the wiring. It will use the same length of belt and will not do anything more than take up the slack.

If its a serpentine belt (everything runs off of one belt) I've heard of using a smaller belt. You would have to reroute the belt with a piece of string and take it to an auto partsd store and find a belt of that size. I honestly dont know if it would work though. I dont really see a way you can drive it without breaking the pulley.

Yugie 29 is right. You can remove the compessor and the lines going to it so the don't just hang loose and ask for a belt for your van without Ac. Good jobYugie

mystyrusty is right. get an extention pully in place of AC compressor, for like $26. I just did one for same exact reason 3 weeks ago. belt may have to be a little smaller than original. but dont just get a smaller belt, or one without a/c. may not work and cause long term failure, and headach.

Under the hood is a belt routing diagram. If it shows 2 routes, one with and one without a/c, just buy the belt for your vehicle without a/c and route it like the diagram.
