because it took your mind off the pain. and some times even releived some of the pain. if you had gotten shot and you heard that this would reduse your pain wouldyou try it? also think about this most people thought that it would have no health efects and doctors even told people to start. the main reason women did not start at this time was that they did not have the pains of war on them so they saw it as medcine for the men.

Probably a combination of the fact that many soldiers involved in the war picked up smoking, as cigartettes were standard issue. Smoking can be a good stress reliever, especially for those under high stress, as the WWI solider would have been. The health risks associated with smoking ciagrettes had not yet been discovered, so smoking was also a popular trend and a "cool" thing to do.

Popularity among men was the free cigarettes the companies would give to the soldiers as part of their care package. Back in the day..cigarettes were deemed safe and medicinal.
Women were basically looked upon as tramps if they smoked in public....some states even went as far as making it illegal for women to smoke.

Only men were recruited to serve as soldiers.
During noncombat moments (which can be long), the soldiers would be bored...they chatted, played cards and smoked.
And so, this former soldiers returned home as nicotine addicts. Also, tobacco companies promoted smoking cigarettes as a sexy, manly ideal. (Only loose women smoked cigarettes and hung out with men while good women stayed home with the kids.)

Cigarettes were standard issue during the war. I don't know why, but there wasn't the negitive stigma attached to them back then.

I think because it became popular with the U.S. military men and was picked up by other male citizens.
