Never being able to drive a championship-winning car is reportedly one of the reasons for his grand prix racing departure. NASCAR racing in my opinion requires a big deal of driving skills but not much compared to F1. He probably would do very good after some adaptation time [maybe a few months since he learns very quickly] if the right equipment is provided.
I think the biggest impact for NASCAR will be the new markets that Montoya would potentially open for the organization, possibly but not necessarily including new races abroad.

*** No taxi driver, actually, in 1999 Chip Ganassi referred to him as possibly "the next Senna".

If his transition is successful, it's a good move for Montoya. It adds some life to the end of his career. Successful transition or not, it's good for NASCAR. It brings in international attention which is the only way NASCAR can increase popularity. They've peaked out in the US.

So far, the driver with the best transition from open wheel to stock cars has been Tony Stewart. I think that Montoya's aggressive driving style combined with his talent could help him make a Stewart - like transition. But, Tony had an advantage in his transition. He came from a pure oval track series to another nearly pure oval track series. JP's been away from oval track racing for quite a while now and only time will tell if he's successful or washed out. One thing is for sure, NASCAR will be the final chapter of his career.

On formula 1 he was in Mercedes Mclaren team. Next year, Fernando Aloso (champion of 2006) is moving in from Renault. For sure he will be the first pilot. Montoya would continue as second driver. Montoya decided to move to Nascar looking for more succes in his carreer in other market.

Montoya needs some time to adjust to the heavier stock cars. The only thing that I can think is that he may have waited too late in his career to make this move. Younger guys have an easier time to adjust than established veterans. Juan is not a spring chicken and it will be a tough transition.

I'll withhold total judgment until he gets about ten or fifteen Cup races under his belt to see how he is adjusting.

Nascar is all about ramming people off the road. And in his last two races in F1, JPM did just that: pushing off Rosberg in Canada and bumping into his teammate, causing a huge pileup and a quadruple barrel-roll for another driver at Indy.

He'll fit in well there, but F1 needs a "bad boy".

if tony steward is doing good (he is a 2 time champion) then why not montoya? they both came from open wheel cars and montoya has the f1 experience under his belt.

I don't know as I have never seen him race.

I do think that he is going to struggle. I mean they are bringing him into the Cup series right off the back when they need to put him in the Busch series to get experience. And the equipment at Gnassi is crappy to say the least.

It's definitely good for him. He will have a longer career in NASCAR than F1 for sure, and family wise, won't have to travel as far as before.

Montoya is a glorified Bogotá taxi driver. A spoilt brat who could not make it amonst men.

I think it was a bad move from montoya because schumacher's retirement he would be the most calibre in formula1. So i conclude its a bad move
