I brought a ring in to be sized and upon receiving my ring back I noticed a very thin line on the table and a white spot now protruding into the diamond. He told me it was a feather.. it was not there when I brought it in.. and neither was that thin line.. can a jeweler crack a diamond while repairing it? He told me it was impossible and I just never noticed the so called feather. I have had this diamond for 4 years I think I would have noticed the feather.. I can't find my papers on them and I never had it mapped... what can I do.. Can a diamond be damaged while being repaired?

There is a difference between a feather and a crack. Ask a gemologist to identify exactly what it is, and the problem will be easier to solve.

Of course it can be. The only thing that can damage a diamond is another diamond unless your diamond is not a perfect gem. You should always check jewelry thoroughly when you pick up the item. I had an 1/2 carot emerald set with 9 smaller diamonds on each side enlarged to a size 7 from a size 5. The jeweler scratched the emerald noticably! I noticed this when I was at the jewelers and they couldn't deny it was they who did this. So, they chose another ring of the same type they still had at the store and sent it to a different person for enlargement.

Sounds like a scratch on the table, and maybe in the process of heating the ring for sizing and soldering, what was a small, invisible flaw in the stone turned into that white feather you see now. If your jeweler claims no responsibility, and you have no map or appraisal to back you up, I think you are pretty much SOL. Good Luck!

Yes, I have. I was working up for it for a couple of months, my cousin (aged 4) found it and well, chipped it. I went to the jewellers and when I got it back, the chip was still there and it had a crack right down th middle!

Yes a diamond can be damaged. If you can prove it had no feather, then they owe you a replacement.
