My department sat down and determined this system:
Tests/projects=30%
Class participation=25%
Quizzes=20%
Classwork=15%
homework=10%
We are on a computer grading system that weights the grades and calculates for us, so there is no real math involved or error.

There's no single formula because every teacher and course is different. It depends on how many quizzes you give, how many tests, how much homework, how many papers, class participation etc. I work these out for each course each semester. Usually I don't "count" homework but use it as a lever if a student is borderline between two grades. One thing to remember is to be able to justify the grade you have given if and when it is challenged by student or parent. So keep careful records, and make sure the students understand your grading policy. Better put it in writing!

Personally I don't weight assingments. Each assignment is worth a certain number of points. When I need to determine a grade I add up the points earned and divide by the total points (then multiply by 100 to get the actual percent).
I prefer this way, that way a student can always figure out their grade, there are no surpises.
The weighting comes in when homework is only worth 2 pts a day and a test may be worth 40 or 50 pts.

Are you a teacher asking HOW to grade your own class (WOW!), or a student trying to second guess. There is no one way. As a teacher I decide how to guide my students, and if I must give grades (which I prefer not) the system is molded by my objectives. What a question!

of course it is honest. it is your instructor's class no longer yours. If attendance is needed then you somewhat could bypass. in case you do no longer bypass then you somewhat lose factors on your grade. it is so trouble-free as that. i do no longer see your concern right here? in case you get greater stuff executed at homestead then head homestead after the class and get your 'stuff' executed. even though it rather is a 'coursework' based class, curiously it has some 'attendance' to its grading scheme. in case you 'know' you would be merely sitting there doing no longer something, in step with risk you may take notes or checklist the lecture for mirrored photograph later. you additionally can confer with you professor and clarify your concern with attending the class. i individually think of it is the suitable thank you to decide on your concern. Get to renowned your professor and that they on occasion assist you to out. even however, on your case the professor will merely snicker at you and positioned somewhat examine next on your call to grade you somewhat greater durable now. in case you do in comparison to how attendance is needed in this class you have got taken yet another instructor. Gotta love professor reviewing ahead of class registration :-D EDIT: in reaction on your further information asserting"i will't take notes because of the fact its no longer a lecture!", what then is the purpose of you sitting in that class? there is not any way you bypass there and take a seat in silence for the size of the class. the instructor has to lecture or a minimum of occupy a while with some thing they are engaged on. even regardless of if it rather is not any longer a lecture i'm one hundred% useful she lectures you on some thing pertaining on your present day paintings. And with that mentioned, you could write stuff down on a bite of paper merely such as you may do in a lecture. the only way i will see your element is that in case you attend this class and not something happens for the entire era. It makes rather no experience in any respect that a instructor could do exactly no longer something for the time of their class time. So till you're being asked to do paintings in this class you're being lectured! And if that may no longer the case then clarify what it is exactly the instructor does for the time of their class time.

it depends. every teacher has their own sistem. you cant just average it out either, as some teachers weight different assignments differently, or scale tests depending on how important the unit is. most teachers now use computers to figure this out as the actuall math has become waaay to complicated.
