Okayam castle and the adjacent Korakuen, just st other have already mentioned. Each time I go there, we go to hot springs and ski resorts.
Kurashiki is a town next to Okayama City that is rebuilt in the old style, a tourst spot none the less.
When I go to Okayama, I usually get driven everywhere by my longtime friend, so I cannot remember where each place is exactly at. One thing come to mind, since I have lived in Tokyo for the past 3 years, I am used to going anywhere by train or subway. Okayama is a one stop shinkansen city with surface street cars and bus to serve the central areas. Other than that you really need a car.
Oh, Okayama is about 50 minutes from Hiroshima by Shinkansen. One should visit Hiroshima if they are already in Okayama. If you go in the nobori homen, Osaka is 1 hour away by shinkansen. Osaka is Osaka and there is much to do there.

Okayama castle is typical Japanese traditional castle.
Kouraku-en is splendid garden.
My recommendation is Kurashiki city's 'Bikan-chiku' in Okayama prefecture.
It is second beatiful town in Japan probably.
http://www.kurashiki.co.jp/bikan/index-e.html
It is written by English.
The view of Seto sea from Mt. Washu is spectacle.
Ushimado, Ashimori, and Shimotsui, are also good place
Old and simple town, quite nice.

There are many nice side trip as well, including Bitchu-Takahashi, Kurashikil, the Kibi Plains area, and Onomichi. If you want to branch out more, in Kagawa is the wonderful Kopirasan Shrine in Kotohira:

I think Kurashiki chibori-koen, an amusement park is a good place to go out on the first date.
By the way, how did you learn Japanese?

I would go to Korakuen Gardens. But if you are going during your winter break it would be cold!
At night I would go to Kaigarayama to see the beautiful night scenery.
