That's a very good question and I ask women this a lot...
I'm 47.
Personally, I stopped being interested in the jerks by the time I was about 18 or 19. Occasionally we believe that jerks appear in good guy clothing, but generally the wool that is pulled over our eyes is wool that we carry in our Gucchi purse for just such occasions. Women fool themselves into believing that, with the right woman, a man will change. With all the right lovin', he'll be different, but still strong enough to be her hero when necessary.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Abuser profile? Lots of ego... no self-esteem.
Good guy profile? No ego... puts her equal to himself. Lots of self-esteem which is confidence with back-up.
Ladies? Ego is a guy who says he's the greatest lover on the earth and he's a total disappointment. Self-esteem is a guy who says "Um... yeah, I know how to fix brakes on a Toyota..." and then does it.
Ego is "You're so lucky to be with me, baby! Ask any of my ex-girlfriends!" Self-esteem is a guy who says "I enjoy having dinner with you. You're easy to talk to. I feel like I can be myself with you" and he is. He's relaxed and not "on" all the time. He's genuine and smart and funny and not worried about his hair being perfect for the waitress.
Lots of women take almost 30 years to evolve into a damaged person who's dated enough jerks to have been educated fully in the ways of the jerk. Eventually they look at the good guys and say something like my favorite movie line ever: "You're everything I never knew I always wanted."
Keep being a good guy. If you start being a jerk just because it's what they all want, you'll wind up with a girl who isn't ready for a real relationship. Hold your own. Give them time to wise up.

According to a very interesting anthropology book, "The Murderer Next Door," women subconsciously choose mates that attract other women, and that will father a "sexy son." If a woman produces a son that is attractive to women, her genes will successfully pass to the next generation. So whether the boyfriend/husband is good or bad doesn't matter to her genetic survival---it only matters that he has sex appeal to women.

It's not women that is the problem, it's YOUR CHOICE OF WOMEN. Doesn't it ever click with you that if you are dating bitches, it's because YOU picked them, or didn't do a good enough job of weeding them out? Don't blame all of us for your lack of good sense.

I agree with you. I look at it like this, if they can't appreciate the treasures that are right in front of their eyes, then they don't deserve them in the first place. Best Wishes =)
