I'm trying to tell (TIM P) the proper one is negative.

The proper one to disconnect first is the ground. If the ground is negative, then disconnect the negative first. If the ground is positive (on some older cars like Hudson and Nash) then disconnect the positive first.

Always the ground cable first.
The REASON is for the sake of safety. This way, if a wrench comes in contact with the body or frame or engine there won't be s short-circuit that burns down your car, causes the battery to explode (hydrogen sulfide gas) or ruin that very expensive wrench.

Mr. Waplambad......... Is quite correct --The grounded teminal comes off first for safety's sake and don't worry about codes , because the newer cars store the codes in non-volatile memory on losing power.
