The least confusing thing to do is to change all the subtractions into additions.
5 + 1y - 3y
5 + 1y + -3y Now combine 1y and -3y
5 + -2y Now "commute" the 5 and -2y. You can add in any order you want, right?
-2y + 5
It takes a little confidence to play around with the algebra, just doing the things that you know work. I suggest you keep practicing. It'll only help!
