hello there. first is your check engine light is on. if it is do go to auto zone only for code, because a code doesn't mean the exact problem. maybe could be Tcc, good answer bye that person. but start simple before that. first see if engine light is on. if it is get code e-mail me at greiljl@alfredstate.edu with code, type of car, type of trany, year, and engine size, before 7 in the morning, and can look up plenty of info, and con-salt with 15 other trained techs for no cost. can e-mail back by no later with diagnosis. good luck

Sounds like you have an electrical problem. It can be anything from a loose battery cable or main ground strap to the TCC solenoid. This must be diagnosed by a certified mechanic. Any answer you receive is a guess. A mechanic will recreate the problem with diagnostic equipment attached to the vehicle. Sometimes electrical problems are hard to find and affect many systems. The vehicle's computer communicates with what is called reference voltage; 0 - 5 volts, if this voltage is corrupted it can cause all sorts of problems in totally unrelated systems, i.e. you hit the brakes and it causes the main ground to loose its connection, fuel pump stops, injectors don't fire etc, Take it in for an accurate diagnoses.

I think you are the one who that question wrongly like 'what is wrong with the car which stops when you hit the brake?'

I think you car is suffering from low idling if your car has a carburetor, if you have a injector car then you cannot do it by yourself you have to give it to a mechanic.

If you have a VW, they are designed to die when you stop, and restart when you touch the gas. Try popping it in neutral, it is easier whn idling your car than in park. If you stop and get out and leave it running, you idle smoother in "N" with the parking brake on. But with gas these days, I'd shut mine off manually at the stoplight --I have a V8, old police interceptor, dang lots of HP.

could be many things, with an automatic, if the TCC solenoid is bad, it will die at stop signs/lights because the torque converter doesn't unlock. It'sd the same as stopping with a stick shift without using the clutch.

Your car must be a standard. The clutch needs to be down when you hit your breaks. It takes a while, but you'll just have to suffer through a couple of embarassing months until you get it down.

Could be your alternator; engine needs rpms to keep running. Try shifting into neutral when you come to a stop sign, and revving the engine a bit until you have to shift into drive and pull away.
