I don't think its a big deal. I have three children myself, and I don't find it rude at all if the cashieer/server/or whatever doesn't make a comment about my children. In fact, most times I prefer it because my kids really start to get a big head about all of the "What a precious child you have" comments they seem to get. When I waited tables, I never commented on people's children or prengnacy not because I was being rude, but because I don't believe its very nice to lie, at the time I really had no interest in babies, and really still don't have interest in anyone other than my own babies. I really can't see how not commenting is being rude, to me it would only be rude if you said something like, "Boy that sure is an ugly child!" Or, "Man, lady you come in here and buy nothing but junk food and for the past 9 months you sure have put on some weight!" I doubt your saying that.

Sorry, not an answer, but relating to the question you ask......
There are a lot of women (and bloody young girls!) who I ignore the bulging bellies of because, I have no idea whether they are pregnant or plain 'fat.'
I really don't want to ask, 'When are you due?' only to find out that 'I have somehow insulted them'.... because I made an assumption. On the other hand, why should i give up my seat on a bus / train for someone because they are 'fat' and will take up more room than the seat I'm going to vacate?
Life can be so confusing.

Of course they won't find you rude. When women in my family get pregnant, we prefer it if at least someone doesn't draw attention to how fat and blimp-ish we feel. It's nice sometimes not to have every single person you meet wanting to know every detail about your pregnancy. You shouldn't worry

I'm with you. I mean, ask if you're truly interested or really think the kids are cute, but if you're doing it just to do it, then it's just obviously fake. Those moms just wanna pay and get out of the store anyway.

No, people will not find you rude at all. In fact, it's refreshing to see someone mind their own business for once...If you don't want to comment, then don't

Absolutely not, better to not say anything than be insincere
I used to feel the same way you do and in my experience
no one was expecting any comments.

No it isn't rude. If you have no interest it's better not to pretend that you do because people usually see through it.
