Codify means to put into law. During the Colonial period the British denied the residents of some colonies the right to jury trials. The Crown feared that a jury would be too sympathetic to the Revolutionaries so trials were only judged by appointees of the King. The suspension of jury trials for English citizens was in direct opposition to the Magna Carta and was one of the primary complaints against the King in Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. Therefore the Founding Fathers codified the right of citizens to demand a trial by the jury of his peers.

The text of this amendment is:

"In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law."

This is only referring to civil trials, so any answer referring to criminal trials is off the mark.
The meaning of the first clause is that all civil trials for damages are entitled to jury trials. Today, this is no big deal and most smart litigants avoid juries if at all possible.
the importance is ion the second part of this amendment - once the finder of fact makes a finding, that finding is very rarely overturned on appeal. If the jury, or the judge, finds that the accident occurred at he corner of State and Main, it is highly unlikely that an appellate court will even look at that fact.

There are exceptions, but rarely enforced. If the jury finds that the accident occurred at the corner of State and Main despite all the evidence showing otherwise, then an appellate court could reverse the decision and order a new trial.
