I suggest reading the volume THE HOME FRONT in Time-Life's history of the Second World War.

You will learn about rubber shortages, fuel shortages, food shortages, rationing of many things, scrap metal drives and the transition of a consumer goods economy to arguably the greatest military industrial power in the world.

Your local library should have a copy.

Industries boomed in the United States after the war, so people were earning more money and spending it, lol.. New products came on the market to feed this new demand.
