Depending on what you want to write about, there is a bunch of majors to explore. English is good just as a general subject that could suit any writing. There are also creative writing, journalism, and comparative literature. And if you want to do technical writing or something in a specific field, major in that. For example, if you want to write biology books, major in biology.

Like the other people have said before me, there are classes in colleges that you can take: journalism, creative writing, English with a concentration in writing, etc.
But if you want to be a writer, then just be one.

You can check your local community college or university for courses on creative writing. Also, check with your local writers club, join it, and network with other writers. They will more than likely be supportive and give you good information. Also, they may offer several workshops throughout the year you can attend. Good luck with your writing!
