I have an IUD, and I can never find my string. But, every time I go to the Dr. they can find it. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you've only had it a short time.

it is probably fine. they have a tendency to sometimes fold up into the cervix. if you had it placed very recently- less than a month or two- it may have fallen out or be inside your abdomen. if you have had it for a while, the strings are prob inside your cervix. your doc can do an exam to look for them and if he cant find them, an ultrasound to be sure it is still in the uterus. if it is, no problem. btw, i have seen this many many times and never once was the iud lost, the strings were just up in the cervix

It may mean your IUD has moved and you should get it checked at your local family planning clinic, you should also use additional contraception during this time and for up to 7 days after it has been repositioned depending on the type of device.

I would squat as low as you can and try to reach up as for as you can. If you still can not find it try laying on your back kinda like spread eagle and search for it again. If you still cant find it call your doctor in the morning and have them remove it.
