Well, it's not "a RAM" it's just RAM...
Prices vary widely, depending on brand, speed, etc. but rough averages would be:
512MB -- $50
1GB -- $90
2GB -- $150

That PNY brand RAM you can get at Fry's, Newegg, and other big stores is pretty cheap. On the day after thanksgiving, you can get a gig for about 30 bucks!

patriot 2*256 ram modules = $43
(two bars of ram each with 256mb make 512 mb, this was the cheapest brand and may not have good warranty ,extra bux for a brand name manufacturer may have better warranty)

It depends on what kind you need. Older PC's take PC100 or PC133 and newer ones need DDR. You need to get the right one just like getting the right air filter for a car.
Go to www.crucial.com or www.pny.com and enter your model number, or just let it do the checking automatically.
Or, take the PC to a local computer shop and have them put it in for you, as there is some chance you could damage the PC by doing it yourself.
