That's a little difficult. Although community service is great, it's hard to fake it. If you start doing really great things right before college, it's so obvious that you're doing it just to look good for the schools you'd like to go to. So depending on how close you are to college, it might be to late to make any efforts seem really sincere. But do whatever you can anyway - something is better than nothing. If you can balance work with school - do it. Join extracirricular activities and try to show that you are a well-balanced student.
You shouldn't try to do good things just to impress a school. That's pretty lame. You should do good things because you want to.

Hi...
1. A 4.0 average... good grades are of major importance... then join an academic excellence club.
2. Join the school sports team (football, baseball, or basketball, etc.)
3. Run for student counsel or participate on the debate team.
4. Do a community activity (work at a soup kitchen feeding the homeless, tutor kids, be a big brother, scout leader, etc.)
5. If you can't do none of the above, try out for JROTC.

I would write an Essay on why school is important to me, and why I want to attend that specific school. Also let them know my long term goals and why this is important to me. I would let them know my qualifications and learning ability, it would be like you are applying for a job. Then submit it to the school you want to attend with a Cover Letter and call like a week later. I had to do all that and now I am attending Kaplan University College. You could burn down the library, perform an armed robbery on the dean's office, gather up a band of pirates and pillage the campus, or even go streaking through the halls of a school building.
Any of those would definitely get their attention!

Get the highest possible grade point average and join groups, do something worthwhile, pass your entrance exams with high scores, and have impeccable recommendations. A guaranteed recipe.
