1) Participate in both school and non-school activities (volunteering, church, etc)

2) Take your SAT's (and all the others) seriously.

3) Do your research and find out which colleges really offer the academics you want to pursue.

4) Prepare for your essay's with sincere, articulate, grammatically correct answers.

5) Try to obtain and maintain at least a 3.4 GPA while participating in other activities. Colleges look at this to see if you can handle the academic load as well as life activities.

Hi, if you are still in high school...best if a freshman or sophomore, but try taking the higher classes and doing great on your tests. When my son started applying to colleges he was getting letters from places we had never heard of. He ended going to Chicago Institute of Technology. They gave him a stipen even. He had complete room and board and they still paid him. I told him he was the only person I had ever known that got paid to go to school. The only thing we could figure out was the information that was in the computer system about his high school performance. Good luck to you.

Polish your admissions essay(s) until they are near perfect. Study as hard as you can for standardized tests like SAT, ACT, etc. Be involved in school, not just a good student.

These things will set you apart, though there's no substitute for good grades.

Take it from someone who could be at a top college but instead goes to a state school... it is WORTH every second you spend on these things.
