Its just a film but its loosely based on fact.
There was an american murderer called Ed Gein who was a transvestite that lived with his mother who bullied him and when she died, he went a bit crazy and started dressing up as her (psycho was based on this story too) and he killed women to make himself a woman skin suit.
I was very dissapointed when I found out the police tape part of the Texas chainsaw massacre was fake!

The films are based on the real story, but they make the films far more hollywood... It is based on a real story about Ed Gain who used peoples skins to cover himself...But i could do a better film if i killed real people... And my location would be close to the film also... And i'd need a camera man who doesn't scare easily :)

it's not what the movie portrays. I heard the character leatherface is based on Ed Gein because Ed used to kill people and wear their skin. Just by basing it on that they can say it's a true story. Don't think that the events happened like that just because it's in the movie.

It's based on a true story. On the new version of this movie on the DVD, check out the extra features it tells you all about it on there.
It's based off of Ed Gaines, a serial killer!

Yes when the original came out it was supposed to be based on a true story, but of course the movie is grossly exaggerated!

Just remember that when movies are based on true events, it pretty much means fiction. Movies blow real events waaaaaaay out of proportion to the point that it loses believability.

Based on a true story, the new version is a very flimsy adaptation of the true story.
