I lived there for over two years and never once had anything bad happen to me. There are some areas that are worse than others to live, but you'll get a sense of that when you go there. eg areas like Finsbury Park, Hackney etc have bad reputations, but you hear things on the grapevine and will know where to avoid.

As with any large city, you just need to use your common sense. Don't walk alone late at night, especially around 11.30pm, as all the pubs close around 11pm. Keep your valuables close to you and don't carry anything too expensive. Don't make eye contact with people if youre feeling nervous and stick to the lighted, populated areas.

Mugging may be common, but not one person i know had it happen to them. I lived on the East side, in East Ham and on the North side, in Finchley. I also had mates who lived in Clapham, Bethnal Green, Hammersmith, Tooting Bec etc and they were all fine areas to live.

Good Luck and Have fun there :-) I loved it and didn't want to leave. It takes awhile to grow on you, but once it gets under your skin, you'll be a fan for life.

Any where really safe? The main thing is not to stick out like a sore thumb. When looking at a map go into a pub order a beer or soda and review your map. The more you stand out the more likely you'll be mugged or worse. Make sure to carry your passport and money close to you. They have these small pouches on a string you can just place inside your jacket so that no one but you knows its there. Don't whatever you do carry a fanny pack. A small day pack is okay but, don't carry valuables with you. Keep your valuables back at the hotel or in a deposit box. London is a huge melting pot of cultures and most are quite friendly obvioulsy everyone speaks English so that is one big feat already. Don't be afraid to ask some of the locals for instructions if you don't want to pull out the map all the time of course, make sure the locals aren't the sketchy ones. Have fun lived there for 4 months and enjoyed every minute of it.

I was born in and grew up in london and can tell u that its probably as safe or unsafe as any other major city. East and south london are thought of as "rough" areas (i.e. brixton, peckham, canning town etc) although I never had any problems there, just watch where u wander at night (i.e. don't walk through the parks late), don't look like a typical tourist with camera out etc and don't get taken in by people. London is a great city and u will love it if u prepare a little. The underground and busy market places such as camden, can have its share of pick-pockets and muggers just like anywhere else has. Just be aware!

London is an exceedingly secure city, except in some undesirable parts that are nowhere close to the vacationer aspects of the city. And nowhere contained in the city is risky at 6 PM. i have likely spent a finished of a month in London on 3 separate journeys, went all around the city in any respect hours which includes many non-vacationer parts, and that i in no way felt risky everywhere, at any hour, and barely talked about something that gave the impression to be even a borderline undesirable community.

I would say to be very careful. I am married to a Brit, who left London several years ago because the country was becoming unsafe and flooded with immigrants. It's gotten even worse now. A friend of ours who lives in London is just so depressed at the state of things - he's trying desperately to get out of the UK.

i just got back from London, and nothing happened. other than the terror threat at heathrow several weeks ago, and the train system bombing about a year ago, i think its generally a safe city i guess. just stay in "ZONE ONE", which is like City of Westiminster (Soho, Covent Garden, Leicester Sq., Piccadilly Circus, houses of parliament, westiminster abbey, etc.) and like the Tower of London, and Bloombury/St. Pancras (where british museum is) or basically anywhere near the City of London (small sq. mile bourough of Greater London) along the river and u;ll be fine.

Sure it is I spent three weeks in London. Late May/Early June and Early July. I had a guy who tried to mug me at 5 a.m. one morning but I punched him in the balls!
