Is it just another expense that will not enhance my maintenance program.

It depends on how big the fleet is, how big the trucks are and how much it costs to change the oil.

The big carriers running semi's usually do oil analysis because it lets them know exactly when to change the oil and can predict the oil breakdown point so engine can be run longer on same oil without damage yet oil is changed as soon as it needs to be.

In addition, analysis can show up developing mechanical problems, like wear, bearings, etc that can allow you to pull the rig out of rotation to have work done before something breaks without bearing the expense of a costly breakdown on the road. In fact, this may be a more important benefit over the long haul since one reefer full of rotting stuff could be a huge liability!

Diesel engines create harmonics in the engine. The alkaline level changes in the coolant. The oil gets contaminated with diesel fuel because it gets everywhere and it will damage the engine if there is too much contamination. I personally feel that when you service your diesel engine you should test the alkaline level in the coolant and do an oil analysis. Good luck.

It can be used to find water/antifreeze that could be a leaking head gasket. I believe it can also show leaking piston rings. All in all a good maitenance program can find those problems to.
