Cough drops contain the same medication as cough syrup, just in smaller doses. They are a cough suppressant. Just make sure you get cough drops, not throat drops.

cough drops normally have a menthol ingredient in them that somewhat numbs the back of the throat temporarily turning off the reflex or urge to cough.

They don't cure a cough or cold but the menthol in them will clear your head for a while and the other flavourings will sooth a sore throat for a time.

they're just sugar and menthol...both are soothing to the throat. Menthol gives the feeling of having clearer breathing.
