I have tried pieces of charcoal and kitty litter. It's a beautiful piece. Just want to get rid of the moth ball smell

very lightly sand the interior with fine grit sand paper. You just want to refresh the cedar scent that is under the mothball scent. vacuum all dust and it should be smelling nicely of cedar again.

I have heard that an open container of ground coffee will take away the smell of mothballs after 2 weeks. You can also very lightly sand the inside of the chest to release more of the cedar smell.

Slam64 gets ten points from me!
Sanding will refresh the cedar smell.
I can't help but wonder why somebody thought that mothballs in a cedar box would even be necessary.
