Can a DH really be an MVP? He doesn't even play a position, at least Jeter, Morneau, and Dye play in the field.

Ortiz could play first if the Red Sox wanted him to, but they don't. You shouldn't hold that against him as far as being eligible for the award goes.
Not that it'll matter, since the Red Sox are out.
Who SHOULD win? Johan Santana. Unfortunately, it looks like Jeter will get it, since the Twins candidates will likely split votes.

Dye will not win it because even though the White Sox might make it he is not the man that has carried the team, if they have been carried, it's Thome, Konerko and Crede.
Morneau might win it but since he had a slow start he wasn't "valuable" all year. And Liriano, Santana, and Mauer have carried the Twins more so.
Derek Jeter seems to be the pick seeing his high average, under 20 HR's but might get 100 RBI. He is the face of the Yankees and with all the injuries he's the only one that has been able to carry them.
Ortiz, Ortiz, Ortiz. I'm a beantown fan so I like him the most. It might be another 2005 year being the defense vs DH debate. I think Jeter's defense should only be considered if he won the gold glove but he won't so why is his defense so valuable Yankee fans? Ortiz's 5 walk-off (3 HR) hits should cover some ground for him not playing defense. Even though he has a .285 average, he leads the AL in HR, RBI, and Slugging. He broke the Red Sox single-season HR record so that should also cover some ground.
So I think it will between Ortiz and Jeter. Whoever wins, the votes will 1 or 2 off from each other. But in the end, I gotta go with Big Papi.
Let's repeat 2004 next year Sox Nation! Woohoooo!

If you go by what teams make the playoff or within 1-2 games it should come down too 2 guys D Jeter and J Morneau if you look at the overall numbers you have to go with morneau. He is batting .324 has 34 hr and 129 rbis and for a power hitter he only had 90 strike outs to jeters 99. if you look at it this way the yankies would of won the east with or with out jeter but when justin starting hitting the ball that is when the team took off and is has been the best team in baseball since that time. if jeter withs it it is a shame. justin was not even talked about untill late in the year, if you heard anything about the twins it was all mauer, santana and fransico

I think these days you have to have either a proven track record going back a few seasons to win it or far out distance all the competition. Although he's had a great season, Justin probally won't win it. Had David Ortiz not gotten injured he would be leading this race right now and earned the right to win it after being snubbed last year. Regardless though, Dye and Ortiz shouldnt win because their teams arent going to the post season. I think its high team to give Jeter his lifetime achievment award in the AL MVP, pre-Cooperstown.

Unlike another idiot, I dont get tired of answering this question. Who should win it? Well, Justin Morneau should. He has a very good record and is with a team that will be in the playoffs. As for Jeter, yes he has one of the best averages, but Morneau beats him in HRs and RBIs.
